ELECTRIC SHOCK & FALL - GROUND FAULT IN TRANSFORMER

A senior power line worker was climbing a utility pole to inspect a transformer after a possible lightning strike during a thunderstorm. As he stopped below the transformer to belt off, his left thumb contacted the transformer case. The case had been energized by a fault caused by the lightning. The employee lost his grip on the pole and fell about 6.1 meters to the ground. As he was falling, he grabbed a service cable and began to slide down the hillside. He let go of the cable and struck his left heel on a boulder. He suffered a crushed heel from the boulder and injured his left knee. His crew used a ladder to carry him to the roadway and administered first aid. He was hospitalized for his injuries.
