Employee's thumb severed by circular saw

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on July 7, 1992, Employee #1 was attempting to notch a 2 in. by 4 in. piece of lumber with a portable power driver circular saw. The piece of lumber was approximately 14 1/2 in. long and Employee #1 was holding it with his left hand. He attempted to make the cut by extending the piece of lumber away from his body, but failed to rest or secure the piece of lumber. The saw kicked back and completely severed the thumb from the employee's left hand. The employee and the severed thumb were transported to UCI Medical Center by the Orange County Fire Department. He was admitted for extensive surgery to reattach the severed thumb and will remain as an inpatient until the thumb maintains circulation. The saw was equipped with a functioning guard that was not locked in the up position.
