Employee's thumb amputated in miter saw

Employee #1 was using a table-mounted 10 in. miter saw to cut an angle in a piece of oak foundation. The blade was already in contact with the wood when he turned on the saw. The strip of wood kicked back, causing his hand to slip toward the saw blade. His left thumb contacted the blade and approximately half of it was amputated. He had been trained in the use of the saw and the blade was properly guarded.
