Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170168330
Event: 01/30/1992
Employee's fingers amputated by chop saw

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on January 30, 1992, Employee #1 was operating a model 18-A chop saw manufactured by Precision Products. According to Employee #1, he turned around to get a piece of stock that was behind him. When he turned back around to slide the stock into place, he stumbled on a small end piece of stock that he had swept onto the floor. Employee #1's foot hit the foot pedal and the-air operated chop saw instantly moved up to the cutting zone and amputated his fingers. Employee #1 said that his hand was in the cutting zone because he slid the stock through the cutting zone; he hadn't been trained in any other way. Employee #1 was treated by emergency crews and taken to Rideout Emergency. He was later transferred to Davies Medical Center in San Francisco, where his index and middle fingers were reattached. His thumb was amputated at midjoint and the little finger on his right hand was cut to the bone.
