Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170201123
Event: 01/14/1993
Employee injures fingers when table saw kicks back

At approximately 12:00 noon on January 14, 1993, Employee #1 was ripping a 2 in. by 4 in. board in half on a Sears Craftsman table saw. As he fed the wood with a push stick in his right hand, his left hand was holding the wood along the outside edge. When the wood jammed, he pulled back on it to allow the blade to speed up. As he pushed the board back in, it kicked back, and Employee #1's left fingers contacted the unguarded 9 in. saw blade. The employee said that he didn't feel any pain but saw blood so he wrapped his fingers in a handkerchief; he then noticed the amputated fingertip on the floor. He was taken to Colusa Memorial Hospital for treatment of the amputated fingertip and lacerations of three adjacent fingers. Four days later he underwent surgery to repair the finger damage and was released in 12 hours. The fingertip could not be reattached.
