Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170360796
Event: 10/09/1996
Employee's spleen ruptured by flying metal object

At 1:30 p.m. on October 9, 1996, Employee #1 was using a front-end loader to fill some small trenches. On an adjacent baseball field, a coworker was using a GrassHopper riding mower, model 721, with three front attached rotary mowers and a 60 in. wide GrassHopper lift deck, model 6261. The mower picked up two 2 in. by 4 in. pieces of old, rusty metal that were held together by a disintegrating rusty bolt. The metal was thrown about 30 ft, striking Employee #1 on his lower left side with such force that the bolt ruptured his spleen. Half of his spleen was removed during surgery, and he was reported to have lost approximately 4 pints of blood through internal bleeding. Employee #1 was left with a 9 in. long surgical scar going up his abdomen from below his navel. The coworker had been mowing without the side exit shield in place, a condition that contributed to the accident.
