Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170723241
Event: 03/12/1993
Employee's finger amputated by falling drilling scowl

At approximately 3:15 p.m. on March 12, 1993, Employee #1, of Dunlap's Well Drilling, Inc., had just driven a section of casing, stopped the rig, and raised the drilling scowl so he could pull the railroad iron section out of that section of scowl (sitting on casing). When he grabbed the railroad iron, the scowl suddenly fell 18 in., pinching his hand against the railroad iron. His right little finger and a portion of the edge of his right hand were amputated. The eccentric had apparently caught dead center at the bottom of the stroke. When the scowl was raised, the eccentric stayed at the bottom. As the employee reached in, the eccentric rotated to the top, allowing the scowl to fall. Employee #1 went to a nearby ranch office and called 911. Emergency crews arrived shortly and he was taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA, and was admitted and treated for the amputation.
