Investigation Summary
A farm worker was pruning peach trees in an orchard. High winds over the two previous days had broken a crossarm on a utility pole. This allowed the outside conductor on the pole to drop. It ended up 1.8 to 2.4 meters above ground. The employee was about 10 trees away from finishing the row. When he moved the aluminum ladder, the ladder apparently contacted the power line, and the employee received an electric shock and lost consciousness. (He did not recall anything else about the accident.) The employee was hospitalized for his injury. The power line was 4.3 meters from base of the tree and 2.4 to 3.0 meters from the outer edge of the tree. The employer had not warned the employee about the hazards posed by the overhead power line.
