Employee's leg fractured when struck by tongs

At approximately 11:25 p.m. on January 2, 1992, at Well #566-Gr, section 33, Township 28S, Range 21E, South Belridge oil field, McKittrick, CA, Employee #1 was running drill collars in the well on rig #13. Employee #1 placed the back-up tongs around the drill collar just below the lead tongs. The driller then rotated the table to make up the joint. While the collar was rotating in the back-up tongs, the tongs grabbed the collar, causing the tongs to rotate and strike Employee #1 on his left leg. Employee #1 was taken to Westside Hospital, Taft, and later transferred to Memorial Hospital, Bakersfield, for surgery and treatment of a compound fracture of his left femur. Employee #1 remained in the hospital until January 7, 1992.
