EMPLOYEE LOSES TIP OF THUMB FROM FALL

AT 8:30 AM ON JULY 8, 1990, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS USING A HIGH-PRESSURE WATER HOSE TO CLEAN A CAN-FILLING MACHINE. SHE WAS STANDING ON A LOW BENCH WHEN HER HOSE BECAME TANGLED. SHE JERKED THE HOSE, LOST HER BALANCE, AND FELL. IN TRYING TO PREVENT THE FALL SHE REACHED OUT AND CAUGHT HER LEFT THUMB BETWEEN THE CAN DIVERTER AND A ROTATING TABLE ADJACENT TO THE CAN FILLER. THE SHEET METAL CAN DIVERTER HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A 1/4-INCH BY 2-INCH RAIL CAN DIVERTER. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS NOT HOSPITALIZED, ALTHOUGH THE TIP OF HER THUMB WAS AMPUTATED.
