Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170697460
Event: 07/08/1992
Employee's fingertip amputated after being degloved by clamp

Employee #1, a paper trimmer operator in the finishing department of a paper mill, was cutting stacks of paper down to order size. This process requires trimming the edges and cutting the paper in halves and then quarters, until the desired size is obtained. Employee #1 was slabbing-- cutting the waste into pieces small enough to be sent back for reprocessing. The stacks of paper have to be turned many times, which requires keeping fingers and hands on the edges of the paper. Employee #1 put his finger on top of the paper, then activated the clamp that holds the paper in place. The clamp squeezed Employee #1's finger and when the employee pulled back his hand, his fingertip was degloved (all the soft tissue was pulled off the tip of his finger, leaving only the bone). A doctor amputated Employee #1's fingertip because the soft tissue was irreplaceable.
