Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170195804
Event: 08/06/1990
Employee suffers breathing difficulties in extreme heat

On August 6, 1990, Employee #1, the foreman of the swing shift for a wood cabinet manufacturer, arrived at work at approximately 4:30 p.m. It was 109 degrees F in the tin building, which had no cooling system. The day shift, which did the woodwork, had gone home early because of the heat. The swing shift did the finishing, and Employee #1 later stated that he had been staining wood and wearing the mandatory respiratory protection for about an hour when he began to have difficulty breathing. He was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital where he was admitted and kept overnight for observation. The company had an accident prevention manual furnished by CAL-OSHA.
