Employee's fingers injured by jet of hydraulic fluid

Employee #1 had removed a truck cab jack, a hydraulic cylinder similar to a shock absorber, from a bobtail truck. A rod came out of the cylinder to hold up the cab of the truck when it was raised to provide access to the motor. The rod had become stuck in the raised position, so Employee #1 put it into a 55-ton hydraulic press in an attempt to push the rod back inside. He was holding the cylinder with his left hand when the side split open. Hydraulic fluid shot out with such force that it took off the skin and flesh from his index and middle fingers, exposing the bones. Employee #1 was taken to San Francisco Hospital, where skin grafts were performed on the two fingers.
