Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14537815
Event: 08/24/1990
Inattentive employee injured when struck by log

At about 7:30 a.m. on August 24, 1990, Employee #1, of Robinson Enterprises, Inc., was working at a logging show on the Crabtree Canyon lease north of Truckee, CA. He was a landing laborer whose job was to trim and buck logs brought into the landing by skidders. A logging truck was being loaded, and Employee #1 was standing and watching at the equipment storage area. At this same time a skidder was bringing in an especially long log with a hooked butt into the landing behind him. Employee #1 was not paying attention to the incoming log only 15 to 20 ft behind him. When the skidder released the log and started to make his turn to leave the landing, the log caught in the grappling hooks and its end swung around. The log struck Employee #1 in the back, knocking him into the logs on the truck being loaded. He suffered head and facial injuries and when the log came to rest on his legs, he suffered additional serious injuries to his legs. First aid was given at the scene, and then he was hospitalized for his injuries.
