Investigation Summary
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on September 29, 1990, Employee #1 was falling timber on the right of way on the Admat timber sale near Beaver, WA. He felled and bucked two Hemlock trees that were 18 in. in diameter at the stump, and one old growth fir tree that was 38 in. in diameter at the stump. The fourth tree he felled was a hemlock tree that was 10 in. in diameter at the stump and which brushed up against a hemlock snag with a 10 in. diameter at breast height. Not realizing he had hit the snag, which was about 60 ft tall, Employee #1 turned his back to walk away. The rotten snag broke off and a section 8 in. in diameter struck him on his right side, severely injuring him. The stump that remained after the snag broke was 10 ft high.
