Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14419279
Event: 02/06/1995
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU LOAD LINE

A structural metal worker was rigging 8.4-meter-long steel I-beams to the load line of a Link Belt crane. The crane was about 45 meters from the I-beam storage pile. The employees were using the Christmas tree rigging method, with one I-beam below another. The metal worker had rigged the first piece with a 2.4-meter choker, and it was suspended above the ground. He then rigged the second I-beam with a 6.1-meter-long bull tail. After he finished rigging the second piece, the load was lifted by the crane. The metal worker guided the lower piece of steel; and, as he did so, the first piece swung into a 7620-volt overhead power line located adjacent to the storage pile. The metal worker received an electric shock and lost consciousness. The crane operator noticed that the injured employee went limp, and he looked up to see the power line contact. He lowered the load away from the power line. Other workers responded, performing resuscitation until emergency medical services arrived. The injured employee was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries 56 days later.
