Investigation Summary

Employee #1, a supervisor, and Employee #2, an inspector, became ill and died within a short period of time. Employee #1 died from septicemia/aplastic anemia. Employee #2 died earlier of leukemia. The two employees sometimes worked together. An autopsy performed on Employee #1 showed no toxicity or evidence of exposure to chemicals. Both employees had been exposed to chemicals during their college years while working as lab assistants. After a review of their work histories, their work at USDA, recent inspections that the employees had conducted, and available medical information, no correlation could be made to substantiate job-related deaths.
