Investigation Summary
A SMALL REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE AND REPAIR SHOP WAS HIRED TO INSTALL A NEW CENTRAL HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING UNIT AT A MOBILE HOME. THE EMPLOYER ASSISTED THE LONE EMPLOYEE IN UNLOADING THE UNIT AND POSITIONING IT NEXT TO THE MOBILE HOME. THE EMPLOYER INSTRUCTED THE EMPLOYEE TO: (1) DISCONNECT THE SOURCE OF ELECTRIC POWER AT AN OLD WINDOW AIR CONDITIONING UNIT; (2) INSTALL NEW WIRING FROM THE OLD DISCONNECT SWITCH TO THE NEW UNIT'S LOCATION, ABOUT 25 FEET AWAY; (3) INSTALL THE RETURN AND SUPPLY DUCTWORK FOR THE NEW UNIT; AND (4) INSTALL THE NEW THERMOSTAT. THE EMPLOYER LEFT THE JOB AT ABOUT 11:00 AM TO PERFORM SOME SERVICE CALLS. THE EMPLOYEE, WHO WAS WORKING ALONE, WAS ELECTROCUTED BY CONTACT WITH A 240-VOLT ENERGIZED PART WHILE HE WAS INSTALLING THE NEW WIRING. HIS BODY WAS DISCOVERED BY THE HOMEOWNER BETWEEN 3:30 PM AND 4:00 PM. RESCUE PERSONNEL AND BUILDING INSPECTORS STATED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER WAS STILL ENERGIZED AS THE EMPLOYEE WAS INSTALLING THE WIRING.
