Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170341028
Event: 09/26/1991
Employee's hand amputated in mixer

At approximately 6:50 p.m. on or about September 24, 1991, Employee #1, a relief worker on the canning line at the Heinz Pet Products Company in Bloomsburg, PA, was standing on the platform of a floor mixer. He noticed that the front guard over the airlock doors had come loose on one side and had dropped off the keeper pins. He proceeded to the area and started clearing away meat products, which he thought were keeping the guard from going back into place. While doing so, Employee #1 apparently stuck his hand inside the mixer through the airlock door without turning the mixer off. An approximately 2 ft in diameter stainless steel auger, which was still turning, cut off his left hand.
