Investigation Summary
On October 24, 1996, Employee #1, an experienced truck driver, and a helper were assigned to transport a cherry picker to an accident site where a truck accident the previous night had resulted in a load of steel being dumped into a ditch approximately 20 yards from the edge of a two-lane highway. Employee #1 parked the truck/lowboy trailer on the opposite side of the highway and unloaded and moved the rubber-tired cherry picker into position. He returned to his truck to retrieve pieces of lumber to put under the outriggers of the cherry picker. He was crossing the highway carrying the pieces of lumber when he was struck by an automobile and thrown approximately 30 yards. Employee #1 landed on the asphalt road surface and sustained massive internal injuries, from which he died.
