Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14435416
Event: 03/24/1988
Employee killed when struck by rolling log

On March 24, 1988, Employee #1 was part of a crew working in a burned-out section of National Forest, loading logs onto trucks for transport to a mill. At approximately 1:30 p.m., the crew started back to work following a break. Employee #1 and the two coworkers were downhill of the yarder, attaching chokers to logs that had been previously cut by another employer. Following normal operating procedures, all signals were given and the yarder operator tightened the haul rope to pull two attached logs. The wire rope line struck a burned-out log attached to a stump (a blown-over tree that had been burnt), disturbing the stump. The burned-out log then rolled downhill, striking and killing Employee #1.
