Employee killed when severely burned by flames or hot air

Employee #1 was attempting to stop or slow a water leak from a pollution-control system attached to a cupola furnace. He was lying face down on a catwalk with his arms in an opening between the catwalk and the pollution air wash system. The employee was burned on his face and hands either by a flame or superheated air. He was killed. The employee was found lying face down, facing west. The catwalk was located on the north side of the cupola. The tote opening was on the west side and below the catwalk.
