Employee bruises leg in slip from ladder rung, later dies

On the morning of January 4, 1993, Employee #1 was climbing down an individual rung ladder to repair the walls of a bin being used to store crushed rock. His left leg slipped off the front of a rung and was caught between the wall and the rung. He was able to free his bruised leg without assistance, then resumed climbing down the ladder and repairing the bin. Later that morning, Employee #1 reported his injury to the plant foreman and the production supervisor. That night, he experienced some swelling. Because the injury was minor, it was not considered a reportable injury until two days later when the swelling worsened. On January 6, Employee #1 saw a company physician and did not return to work until January 18. On that day, he complained of pain in his right arm and left leg. On January 19, he returned to the company physician and did not return to work. On January 29, Employee #1 died in the hospital.
