Employee killed when struck by falling tree

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on October 4, 1991, Employee #1 was working alone cutting pulpwood. The first tree he felled landed across the logging road and struck a dead standing birch tree. The birch tree snapped 71 in. above ground, fell back, and struck Employee #1 in the head. The employer found Employee #1 lying face-up on the logging road with his saw still running and his hard hat sitting next to the tree that he felled. Employee #1 had been killed, suffering a concussion.
