Investigation Summary
A tree service crew was clearing trees from a vacant lot in a residential area. The trees had been blown over during Hurricane Andrew. An employee had cut off a portion of a tree that was lying on its side. The base of the tree was in a vertical position. The employee moved to the back of the stump and was standing in the cavity, cutting another tree. Apparently, the weight shifted from the removal of the upper portion of the first tree, and the tree up righted itself, burying the employee under its base in the process. He was asphyxiated.
