Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170088363
Event: 08/28/1991
Employee paralyzed when struck by log

On August 28, 1991, Employee #1 felled a green fir tree, which came to rest below other felled and bucked trees. As he completed bucking the felled tree, a 40 ft long by 13 in. diameter log rolled down the steep, brushy hillside and struck the employee in the back. When found, Employee #1 believed he was paralyzed from the chest down because he was unable to move his legs. He was working alone, as the other timber cutters were not out because of the windy and foggy weather. The time of the accident is unknown; the employer found Employee #1 at 5:00 p.m. after he failed to attend a planned meal together and began rescue operations. Employee #1 was later involved in a fatal helicopter crash. (See #170088389 for summary of helicopter crash.)
