Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 380462507
Event: 07/24/1988
Housekeeper dies of apparent heart attack

Employee #1, a head housekeeper, was apparently supervising a housekeeping operation involving a flooded basement. The flooding had caused the electrical transformers for the elevators to smoke, and the smoke had risen up the elevator shafts. Employee #1 was performing her duties, which required her being on the second floor when she died. Her death was attributed to arteriosclerotic heart disease, and no mention of smoke inhalation was made in the autopsy. Employee #1 reportedly did not have direct contact with the smoke in the transformer rooms, which was not noticeable in the basement except near the elevators. Newspaper reports that said Employee #1 was moving patients from smoke-filled rooms at the time of her death were not true.
