Investigation Summary
On Sunday, January 8, 1989, laundry Employees #1 through #6 reported an irritating odor. This odor was also smelled by an employee from another department, who turned in an alarm to the fire department. The fire department said that the motor on the ironer was burning out and should be shut off. The motor was shut off for the rest of the day. On Monday, January 9, 1989, the maintenance mechanic turned the ironer on to check the motor and found there was nothing wrong. The machine was left running to ascertain what was the matter. After it had been running for 2 to 3 hours, the odor reappeared. The mechanic and laundry director were called and the employees were told to leave the area. The seal to one of the gears was found to be leaking, causing the gear to overheat, which caused the odor. The seal was repaired before employees were allowed to return. Employees #1 through #6 complained of symptoms and were allowed to go to the doctor. The doctor stated that there were only subjective symptoms and that their blood gases were within normal limits.
