Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 743666
Event: 01/28/1991
Two employees overexposed to X-rays

On January 28, 1990, Employees #1 and #2 were using a Magnoflux X-ray machine to radiographically inspect a Beech 18 aircraft. At approximately 1:30 p.m., they prepared to take a picture by placing the X-ray tube above and the film below the wing. The timer, located on the control panel 75 ft away from the X-ray tube, was set for 6.0 minutes. After 6.0 minutes had elapsed, the X-ray tube appeared to turn off. Employees #1 and #2 then repositioned the X-ray tube and laid down new film while preparing to take another picture. A humming noise was heard coming from the X-ray tube and, when the employees went back to the control panel, the elapsed time indicator now read 11.4. The employee's fingers had been in the X-ray beam only a few seconds out of the 5.4 minutes that the tube had remained on without their knowledge. Employees #1 and #2 were hospitalized.
