Event: 12/20/1989
ELECTRIC SHOCK - DIRECT CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE

THE CUTOUTS ON A TRANSFORMER HAD TO BE OPENED UNDER LOAD CONDITIONS DUE TO A FIRE IN A PLANT SERVED BY THE ELECTRIC POWER LINE. WHEN THE CUTOUTS WERE OPENED, A POWER SURGE RESULTED, WHICH CAUSED ONE OF THE CONDUCTORS OF THE 7200-VOLT OVERHEAD POWER LINE TO BURN IN TWO. THIS CONDUCTOR BECAME ENTANGLED WITH ONE OF THE OTHER CONDUCTORS. A POWER LINE WORKER WENT UP IN AN INSULATED AERIAL LIFT TO UNTANGLE THE CONDUCTORS. HE WAS NOT WEARING RUBBER INSULATING GLOVES. HE WAS ELECTROCUTED WHEN GRABBED BOTH CONDUCTORS.
