ELECTRIC SHOCK - DIRECT CONTACT WITH ENERGIZED PARTS

A CREW WORKING FOR AN ELECTRIC POWER LINE CONTRACTOR WAS INSTALLING A NEW UNDERGROUND POWER LINE. THE CABLES HAD BEEN BURIED, AND THE ENDS OF THE CABLES WERE RUN INTO AN ABOVE-GROUND SWITCHING CABINET. ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES CUT THE EXTRA CONDUCTOR FROM THE CABLE ENDS. LATER, HE TRIED TO CURL THE LOOSE CONDUCTORS AND PUT THEM INSIDE THE BOX. IN THE PROCESS, HE CONTACTED ELECTRIC CIRCUIT PARTS ENERGIZED AT 7200 VOLTS. HE SEVERELY BURNED HIS LEFT HAND AND WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR HIS INJURY. THE EMPLOYEE WAS NOT WEARING ANY ELECTRICAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.
