EMPLOYEE KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY TRACTOR

AT APPROXIMATELY 3 PM ON NOVEMBER 11, 1987, ABOUT 6 MILES SOUTH OF SOUTH BAY ON US ROUTE 27, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS STANDING NEXT TO A PICK-UP TRUCK. HE WAS STRUCK BY A TRACTOR HAULING SUGAR CANE FROM A FIELD TO A LOADING RAMP. THE TRACTOR DRIVER SAW EMPLOYEE #1 STANDING THERE AND STEERED AWAY FROM THE TRUCK. AT THIS TIME, A CANE CUTTER RAN FROM THE FIELD INTO THE TRACTOR'S PATH, CAUSING HIM TO VEER BACK IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TRUCK. THE DRIVER AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO AVOID EMPLOYEE #1, BUT THE REAR WHEEL OF HIS TRACTOR STRUCK AND RAN OVER EMPLOYEE #1. RECOMMENDATION: HAVE DRIVERS ASSESS SITUATIONS AND EITHER SLOW DOWN OR STOP BEFORE PROCEEDING WHEN PEOPLE ARE AROUND. HAVE NON-WORKING VEHICLES PARK OFF THE ROAD. THIS ACCIDENT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT.
