Employee killed when head crushed in hide fleshing machine
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on October 1, 1990, Employee #1, an oiler, and a mechanic were working on an Exeter whole hide fleshing and demanuring machine #1008. The mechanic was installing a manure baffle. As he leaned over to drop the baffle in place, his pliers fell into the machine. He then got down on his hands and knees and groped for the pliers, while Employee #1 leaned over and looked into the machine. The mechanic's knee slipped on grease on the platform and struck the closing pedal, which activated the hydraulic closing mechanism. As a result, roller F caught and fatally crushed Employee #1's head between rollers D and E.
