Abstract: Employee #1 was working on a portioning machine that divides dough into portions to be placed into pie shells. The employee stated that he had been working long hours that week because his employer, Golden Boy Pies of San Diego, was producing pumpkin pies for the Thanksgiving holiday. He also stated that he had worked 16 to17 hours the day prior to the accident and said he was tired. The portioning machine did not have a guard at the time of the accident. As the machine cut the dough, the employee removed the dough balls by reaching into the rear of the machine. He stated that if he waited for the conveyor belt to bring the dough balls to him, the dough comes out at the same time and creates a mess. He used both hands to reach into the machine, near the knife. The employee worked in rhythm with the knife while performing this job. Near the end of his shift, he reached into the portioning machine with both hands and the knife of the machine caught his right hand, causing broken bones in his thumb and index finger. He also received tendon damage. The employee was hospitalized with his injuries.
