    Overview

    The OSHA and CMAA Alliance is providing the association's members with information and guidance to help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to construction industry hazards and increasing access to construction industry safety and health information and training resources.

      OSHA Assistance for the Construction Management Industry Safety and Health Topics page Editorial Board

      The OSHA Assistance for the Construction Management Industry Safety and Health Topics page was developed through the OSHA and CMAA Alliance and added to OSHA's Web site. The following CMAA members serve on editorial board:

      OSHA and CMAA Webpages

      The CMAA Webpage has a Safety-related links page titled, "CM Safety Page", which includes links to the Alliance Program Web page, safety and health regulatory agencies and associations and the Construction Management Industry Safety and Health Topics page. Between both Webpages there were 3,841 Web visits. For more information on the number of hits to the OSHA and CMAA Web pages, please see the Alliance Program Reach table on page 6.

      Print and Electronic Media

      Articles on the OSHA and CMAA Alliance have appeared in a number of printed and online publications, including: BNA Occupational Health and Safety Reporter, Facility Safety Management and OSHA Institute.       The OSHA and CMAA Alliance was promoted at the following event:

      • CMAA National Conference and Trade Show, September 12-14, 2004, San Antonio, TX

      September 13, 2004 - Ginger Henry, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, USDOL-OSHA, made a presentation entitled "Safety is Everyone's Responsibility" to over 120 attendees.

      The OSHA and CMAA Alliance was promoted at the following event:

        • CMAA National Conference and Trade Show: Jess McCluer, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, USDOL-OSHA and Ted Devens, CMAA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit at the CMAA National Conference and Trade Show, September 12-14, San Antonio, TX.
        • OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions: Ted Devens and Danielle Prezioso staffed a CMAA exhibit at OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions, June 14-18, 2004, in Falls Church, Virginia.
      • Cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health practitioners in construction management best practices and/or effective approaches.
        • No products or resources have been developed to meet this Alliance goal.
      • Promote and encourage CMAA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs, Consultation, and SHARP.

      National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

      • Raise awareness through speeches and appearances by CMAA leaders of positive and successful worksite programs and their commitment to workplace safety and health.
        • No products or resources have been developed to meet this Alliance goal.
      • Share information on best practices of CMAA members/worksites with others in the industry through outreach by CMAA and through training programs and materials developed by OSHA, CMAA, and/or others. Promote their implementation through print or electronic media, promotion at conferences, and/or other means of reaching out to others in industry.
        • No products or resources have been developed to meet this Alliance goal.
      • Convene or participate in forums and roundtable discussions on multi-employer worksite issues to help forge innovative solutions to raising construction safety awareness in the workplace.

      Construction Roundtable

      CMAA participated in the Alliance Construction Roundtable for construction-related national Alliances on July 8, 2004. The Roundtable participants discussed how the construction-related national Alliances could work together to address issues such as ergonomics, silica and motor vehicle safety. CMAA has representatives on the Design for Safety workgroup that were created at the meeting.

    2. Executive Summary

      Through the Alliance Program, OSHA and CMAA are working together to help increase the public’s understanding of the safety and health impacts of construction management issues on a job site. This positive relationship has led to the development of the many programs and projects that the team is currently working on or has produced.

      In its third year, OSHA and CMAA committed to continuing the Alliance and signed an Alliance renewal agreement on July 24, 2004. In addition, CMAA members are continuing to serve on the editorial boards for the Assistance for the Construction Management Industry Safety and Health Topics page Editorial Board.

      During 2004, the Alliance was promoted at OSHA’s Compliance Assistance Training Sessions, the Alliance Construction Roundtable meeting and the CMAA National Conference and Trade Show, September 12-14, in San Antonio, TX.

      Ted Devens and Danelle Prezioso, from CMAA, also staffed a CMAA exhibit at OSHA’s Compliance Assistance Training Sessions, June 14-18, 2004, in Falls Church, Virginia.

      CMAA participated in the Alliance Construction Roundtable for construction-related National Alliances on July 8, 2004. The roundtable was designed for the construction-related National Alliances to discuss how they can work together to address issues such as ergonomics, silica and motor vehicle safety, which many Alliances are addressing individually through their agreements. A number of work groups were developed during the roundtable. CMAA is participating in the Design for Safety workgroup.

      At the National Conference and Trade Show, Jess McCluer, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, USDOL-OSHA and Ted Devens staffed an exhibit booth next to CMAA’s exhibit booth. On September 13, Ginger Henry, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Construction Services, USDOL-OSHA, made a presentation, "Safety is Everyone's Responsibility" to more than 120 attendees.

      Finally, the Implementation Team discussed developing on-line courses, using CMAA’s web site. For 2005, CMAA would like to have specific courses on topics such as the Consultation Program. Through the three-day Webinar, 4-5 sub-topics could be included on specific issues that OSHA speakers may address.

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    In the upcoming year, OSHA’s and CMAA’s positive relationship, that was built through the Alliance Program, will continue to grow and the Implementation Team will undertake a number of activities and develop a number of products. These activities will have a positive impact on the Agency since they will help address important topics within the 2003-2008 Strategic Management Plan; including small businesses.

    The projects include the creation of developing on-line courses with OSHA’s participation, using CMAA’s web site and receiving OSHA’s participation in the courses. For 2005, CMAA would like to have specific courses on topics such as the Agency’s Consultation Program. In addition, through the three-day Webinar, 4-5 sub-topics could be included on specific issues that OSHA speakers may address. CMAA is also participating in the Design for Safety workgroup that was created at the Alliance Construction Roundtable for National Alliances on July 8, 2004.

    Finally, CMAA has invited the Alliance Program to exhibit and OSHA representatives to speak at the association’s 2005 National Conference and Trade Show, September 11-13, 2005 at the Hyatt Huntington Beach in Huntington Beach, CA.
