Stand-Down Frequently Asked Question's

  1. What is a Safety Stand-Down?

    A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. OSHA is focusing on "Fall Hazards" and to reinforce the importance of "Fall Prevention."

  2. When is the Fall Prevention Safety Stand-Down?

    The OSHA Safety Stand-Down will be two weeks, from May 4-15, 2015, to coincide with the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week.

  3. How do I conduct a Safety Stand-Down?

    Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a toolbox talk or another safety activity such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards. A Safety Stand-Down should provide an opportunity for employers and workers to talk about hazards, protective methods, and the company's safety policies, goals and expectations.

  4. Who can participate in a Safety Stand-Down?

    We encourage everyone to participate. Last year, participants included general contractors, sub-and independent contractors, employer's trade associations, federal, state and local governmental agencies, professional societies, institutes, and consumer/labor-management interest organizations. Around 5000 certificates of participation were completed through the OSHA website during the 2014 Fall Stand-Down. Nearly 50% of these registered participants were stand-downs with less than 25 employees and over 150 public events were held across the country. More than one million workers participated in the Stand-Down.

  5. How do I get a Certificate of Participation?

    Employers will be able to provide feedback and download Certificates of Participation on their experience. The certificate pages will be active on May 4th at OSHA's webpage Stop Falls Stand-Down and at National Safety Council's (NSC) webpage.

  6. I'm not a construction company; can I still participate in the Safety Stand-Down?

    Participation is not limited to the construction industry. Last year, nearly 15% of Stand-Down participants who provided information by getting a certificate from OSHA were non-construction employers. In fact, the largest single participant was the United States Air Force, reaching approximately 650,000 service men and women.

  7. I'm not located in the United States; can I still participate in the Safety Stand-Down?

    Yes. Several domestic and international companies working outside of the United States participated in the 2014 Stand-Down and we are hoping to have more international participation this year.

  8. I'm a small company with just a few employees; can I still participate in the Stand-Down?

    Yes. Any number of people can hold a Stand-Down. Companies and businesses of all sizes should take time out during the workday to discuss fall prevention with their workers, and participate in the Stand-Down. You can also find a larger Stand-Down Event in your area.

  9. Where can I find information to help me with my Stand-Down?

  10. How can I get an OSHA representative to participate in my Stand-Down?

    Contact your Regional Stand-Down coordinator to talk to someone about your Stand-Down event.

  11. I would like to participate in an event, is there a list where I can find where an event will be held?

    A list of Events in your area can be found by visiting OSHA's Stand-Down website. These events are free and open to the public. Attendees of these Events (including any members of the press) must cooperate with the host employers' site access and safety rules.

  12. How can I get my Stand-Down event listed on the OSHA website?

    OSHA lists Events which are free and open to the public. This webpage helps employers and employees find Stand-Down events that they can attend in their area. Contact your Regional Stand-Down coordinator to learn more.

  13. Is there a cost to participate in the Stand-Down and do I need to pre-register for the Stand-Down?

    No. The Stand-Down is free and you do not have to "register" to participate. Simply hold a Stand-Down with your employees during the weeks of May 4-15 and go online to tell us about your Stand-Down and download a certificate of participation at Stop Falls Stand-Down or National Safety Council's (NSC) webpage after your Stand-Down event.

  14. How long does a typical fall prevention Stand-Down take to conduct?

    It's up to you. A Stand-Down could be as simple as a 15 minute toolbox talk or several hours of training over a week.

  15. Can I still get a certificate if I hold a safety event before or after the weeks of May 4th - 15th?

    Yes. Certificates will be available until June 30, 2015, to allow companies to participate in the Stand-Down. Visit Stop Falls Stand-Down or National Safety Council's (NSC) webpage to download your certificate.
