Figure 1: Hot Work Operations
Hot work operations include job set-up and placement,
inspection and testing of equipment, as well as actual performance
of the hot work.
During hot work
operations, conditions can
change. Piping may leak into the space, the vessel may move, or different types of work
(painting or cleaning) may be
conducted in adjacent spaces. Therefore, maintaining safe
conditions requires constant precautions, including frequent inspection
and tests performed by the Shipyard Competent Person (SCP).
The Confined
or Enclosed
Spaces and Other Dangerous Atmospheres module should be reviewed before proceeding with this
section. Also review the hot work requirements found in 29 CFR 1915.51,
29 CFR 1915.55, 29 CFR 1915.56,
and 29 CFR 1915
Subpart P.
Specific work practices are required for hot work. The majority of the requirements for hot work are discussed
in the enclosed space section.
Additional requirements for hot work in confined spaces
and in other locations are listed in those
sections.
