Dear Dr. Phoon:
This is in reply to your letter of November 10, 1983, addressed to Dr. Ralph E. Yodaiken, Director, Office of Occupational Medicine, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U. S. Department of Labor, requesting information pertaining to work in compressed air and underground tunnelling.
Abstract: Application by Tomaro Contractors, Inc. for a permanent variance and an interim order from the Decompression Tables, Appendix A to Subpart S of Parts 1926.800 through 1926.804 which concern compressed air. The applicant has requested that it be authorized to substitute a decompression table using oxygen, introduced via pressure demand respirators, as the gaseous medium in lieu of compressed air. The interim order is denied until a decision is rendered on the application for a variance.
