Collaboration for Change: Elkins Rehabilitation’s Safety Journey
Company: West Virginia OSHA Consultation Program
At Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center, working together has helped create a stronger approach to workplace safety.
The 111-bed facility, which has 162 employees, learned about the WV OSHA Consultation Program through meetings of the West Virginia Health Care Association (WVHCA). That connection led to a partnership focused on identifying hazards, strengthening safety practices, and involving employees in workplace safety.
Over the past three years, Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center has seen substantial reductions in workers’ compensation costs, directly attributed to stronger safety practices and greater employee engagement.
Building a Stronger Safety Culture
Working with WV OSHA Consultation brought regular visits, hazard assessments, and opportunities to solve safety concerns together. These efforts helped strengthen the facility’s safety culture.
Employees became more proactive about recognizing and reporting hazards and preventing problems before they occurred. Management also strengthened its commitment to safety, leading to timely corrective actions, better training, and clearer communication. The results were measurable: fewer injuries, lower workers’ compensation claim costs, and an improved EMR.
Moving Toward SHARP
Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center’s experience shows how hazard mitigation, employee education, and a proactive safety culture—supported by WV OSHA Consultation—can lead to cost savings and sustained risk reduction.
The facility reached another milestone on April 28, 2026, when it was approved for pre-SHARP status for 18 months. Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center continues to work with WV OSHA Consultation toward achieving full SHARP recognition within the next 18 months.
Its journey demonstrates the value of consistent safety processes, employee involvement, and collaborative partnerships.
The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation Program services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs.
