Company: Nebraska Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program

Nebraska DOL On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program

At Westin Packaged Meats – Westin West Operation, workplace safety has become more than a requirement—it is a shared value. The company, which manufactures imitation bacon bits from soy, serves ingredient customers and major food service companies, including PFG, Sysco, US Foods, and DOT Foods. While Westin West had long been committed to quality, a conversation helped transform its approach to workplace safety.

A Conversation That Sparked Change

The journey began when a member of the local community, who also worked for the Nebraska Department of Labor, spoke with Westin West’s general manager about the Nebraska On-Site Consultation Program.

That conversation opened the door to a new chapter for Westin West.

Through its work with the On-Site Consultation Program and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP), the company strengthened its safety culture and increased employee involvement.

Employees became more aware of their surroundings and learned to look out for one another. They appreciated the company's efforts to protect their safety, and being part of SHARP became a source of pride. Workers also took greater care to perform their jobs safely, recognizing the important role each person plays in maintaining a safe workplace.

Making Safety a Shared Value

Collaboration, training, and employee involvement helped Westin West transform its workplace culture. Safety became something employees could take pride in—not simply a requirement.

That shared commitment helps ensure employees can perform their work safely and return home safely each day.

Westin West's efforts have also earned repeated recognition. The company has achieved SHARP status seven times, most recently in 2026. Each recognition reflects its continued commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation Program services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs.
