Cal/OSHA has long recognized the importance of heat illness prevention. Since adopting the state's Emergency Temporary Standard in 2005, the agency has continued to expand education, outreach, and resources to help employers and workers recognize and prevent heat-related illnesses.

Today, Cal/OSHA, the California Department of Industrial Relations, and Cal/OSHA On-Site Consultation have made heat illness prevention a departmental emphasis program, reinforcing their commitment to protecting workers in both indoor and outdoor environments.

• In 2025, Cal/OSHA On-Site Consultation strengthened these efforts by conducting 1,195 On-Site Consultation visits.
• Educating 46,149 employees on these visits.
  • Completing 144 Compliance Assistance activities focused on indoor and outdoor heat illness prevention, including 79 speeches and outreach events.
  • Directly reaching 11,134 employers and employees through those events.

The OSHA On-Site Consultation Program offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to identify workplace hazards and how to fix them, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, train and educate workers, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs.
