Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 004 Hazard:
29 CFR 1926.760(a)(1): Each employee engaged in a steel erection activity who is on a walking/working surface with an unprotected side or edge more than 15 feet (4.6 m) above a lower level was not protected from fall hazards by guardrail systems, safety net systems, personal fall arrest systems, positioning device systems, or fall restraint systems: The employer is failing to protect workers from fall hazards when performing steel erection activities. This violation was most recently documented at a worksite located at 3500 East 149th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, where worker #3 was required and / or permitted to climb the open web steel trusses/joists, in accessing the upper steel surface, to perform leading edge work without being protected from falling to the next lower level greater than 30 feet below. To abate this violation, the employer must assure that each employee engaged in a steel erection activity who is on a walking/working surface with an unprotected side or edge more than 15 feet (4.6m) above a lower level is protected from fall hazards by guardrail systems, safety net system, personal fall arrest systems, positioning device systems, or fall restraint systems. Pursuant to 29 CFR 1903.19, within ten (10) days of the abatement date, the employer must submit documents showing that it is in compliance with the standard, including the steps it is taking to assure that each employee is protected from falls as required by the standard.
