Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the risk or fire and/or explosion: (a) Slagwool Plant - waste alley for cupola slag - On or about 2/22/00 the 950E front end loader was observed removing slag from the waste alley potentially exposing the loader operator to the hazards created by a fire. The slagging operation caught the vehicle on fire due to the practice of driving the entire vehicle across the slag alley rather than picking up the slag with the bucket and backing out of the pit. One method of abating this hazard would include but would not be limited to: 1. Prevent the operator from driving through the alley that is containing hot slag.
