Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being crushed or falling as a result of crane failure, damage, or tipping when the man basket was attached to hoist personnel. (a)415 West Collins Road, Blackfoot, ID - On or about 16 November 1998, and at times prior thereto, the crane operator for the T I Case Hydraulic Mobile Crane (Model # 3330B/Product Identification # 6225364), the man basket was attached to the jib for hoisting personnel. The crane's rating after being reduced by 50(see 29 CFR 1926.550(g)(3)(i)(B)) failed to provide a safe lifting capacity for personnel. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO ONLY LIFT PERSONNEL IN THIS MAN BASKET WITHOUT THE JIB, AND ONLY WITH THE OUTRIGGERS IN PLACE."
