Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard from a falling crane boom: a) Plant 13, Highway Materials, Inc. 680 Morehall Road, Frazer, PA 19355 Two employees were removing a 30' section of a 4 section, 90' boomby lowering boom to approximately 5 1/2' above ground level and keeping boom in place without placing a blocking support under it. This caused the boom to fold and fall and exposed employees to a crushing hazard. A feasible and practical method to correct the hazard is to support boom by placing blocking under it, move pendant back and reanchor at lower boom section. Employees should never position themselves under the boom when removing retaining pins. Observed 5/31/88.
