Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001B Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to death and crushing hazards due to unplanned collapse of an overhead structure due to the severe corrosion and deterioration of the base supports: a) Iron and Transportation Division 1) Blast Furnace Department; Blast Furnace #2 Precipator area, outside pyrometer room - there was severe deterioration of the concrete supporting piers exposing the reinforcing rods and base plate bolts which were also severely damaged by corrosion, observed August 9, 1989. 2) Transportation Department: North end of the ore yard, stacker conveyor or the supporting foundation structure for the overhead conveyor was severely deteriorated in that the top of the concrete foundation piers had concrete missing, exposing verical and horizontal reinforcing rods and base support bolts, which were also severely damaged by corrosion, observed August 8,1989. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to repair structural damage to the foundation to comply with its original design specifications.
