Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a) Employee was exposed to the hazard of sulfur dioxide gas at airborne levels of; 6.1 ppm for 75 minutes, 8.4 ppm for 40 minutes and 23 ppm for 15 minutes, in excess of the recognized safe short-term exposure limit of 5 ppm for 15 minutes, while working in the vicinity of the sulfur furnace near the diffuser on 12/21/88. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include 1) Increase draft on the sulfur tower; 2) Provide ventilation hood for the sulfur furnace and the check hole at the bottom of the sulfur tower.
