Text For Citation: 03 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of electrocution while charging or slagging or when otherwise in conductive electrical contact with the molten metal in the No. 1 Ajax Magnathermic furnace without the ground detector probe wires being in place on the furnace. This condition existed subsequent to the recent relining of the furnace when the probe wires were removed and not replaced. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to insure that each time a furnace is relined, one or more competent persons inspects the installation of the ground detector probe wires to insure that they are in position and connected in accordance with the furnace manufacturer's recommendations.
