Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumulative trauma disorder(s) from tasks that they were performing engineering and administrative controls were not implemented: a) Dept. 4 - Encapsulated glass window molding ("L" body filmed) where employees who repeatedly perform the task of operating the injection molder machines and also scraping windows which require various arm, trunk, wrist, and hand posture (excessive reaching; flexion; extension and twisting of trunk while exerting force; wrist flexion and ulner abduction in a pinch grip) were exposed to ergonomic stresses which are likely to result cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 9/6/89. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: Priority 1 - Design an appropriate (ergonomic) tool for scraping glass. Priortiy 2 - Provide shorter reaching distances (e.g. storage bin should be within easy reach of machine operator even though it is accessed only once a minute. - Working levels should be adjusted/adjustable.
