Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a plae of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumulative trauma disorder(s) from tasks that they were performing; engineering and administrative controls were not implemented: a) Dept. 1 - Modular line #2 - "W" body (third position filmed), where employees who repeatedly perform the tasks of using tongs to feed parts into the press which requires various trunk, arm and wrist postures (trunk slightly bent forward; arms flexed and elbow slightly extended; shoulders asymetric; forearm supinated; ulnar deviation of wrist) and also using palm button to activate the press while holding tongs which require various arm and wrist postures (forearm pronated; wrist extended; grasp of tongs), were exposed to various ergonomic stresses likely to cause cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 8/28/89. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: Priority 1 - Provide angled tongs to reduce ulnar deviation. Also, provide fatique mat for standing.
